Lake Lanier is the busiest swimming reservoir in Georgia. Buford Dam closed the Chattahoochee River in 1956 and created a lake of about 38,000 acres with roughly 692 miles of shoreline, less than an hour north of Atlanta. Full pool is 1,071 feet above sea level, and the Army Corps of Engineers has operated the reservoir since it filled. Day-use beaches around the lake charge a parking fee and open for the summer season.
