Lake beaches and swimming lakes in Florida

Florida's inland swimming is dominated by Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake in the state and the eighth largest natural freshwater lake in the country. The name comes from the Hitchiti words oki, water, and chubi, big. The lake is shallow for its size, and its stage is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, which publishes a daily average for the whole basin.

Okeechobee is reported as a stage in feet, not as a percent of a fixed full pool, because the Corps of Engineers operates it against a seasonal regulation schedule. The daily report also gives the long-term average for the same calendar day, which is the most useful comparison.
